French seams are a wonderful finish for the side seams especially when using fabrics that can easily fray. It only takes a couple extra steps. *If you are using a slippery fabric spray starch can really help, especially with the bias facing. Just make sure that you test it on a scrap of your fabric first.
Start by placing your bodices wrong sides together and pin.
Sew with a 1/4″ seam allowance and trim to 1/8″. Press seam allowance toward the back bodice.
Turn your bodices to be right sides together. Pin along the seam and sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance, encasing the raw edges.
Check from the right side that you have encased all of the raw edges and you have finished your french seams. Continue on with the instructions for your “Charlotte.”
